John Calvert PhD
Overview
Dr. Calvert's primary research focuses on signaling cascades in the setting of acute myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury and heart failure. His ultimate goal is to identify novel therapeutic targets that will lead to new treatment options to improve the quality of life of patients suffering from a heart attack or that are having heart failure.
Grant awards from the National Institutes of Health and the American Diabetes Association have contributed to supporting Dr. Calvert's research since he established his independent laboratory at Emory in 2008, and his findings have been published in such high impact journals as Circulation, Circulation Research, and Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology.
Academic Appointment

Education
Degrees
- Doctor of Philosophy from Loma Linda University School of Medicine

Research
Focus
-
Studies of the mechanisms of cardioprotection in the setting of acute myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury and heart failure.
Investigations in Dr. Calvert's lab have included evaluations of the cardioprotective signaling mechanisms of hydrogen sulfide in heart failure and the diabetic heart, as well as examinations of the cardioprotective signaling mechanisms of exercise.
