Joanna Bonsall MD, PhD
Overview
Joanna Bonsall, MD, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine. She completed her undergraduate training at Emory University, and her medical training and graduate training at Emory University School of Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Emory University, and was hired as a hospitalist at Emory University Hospital Midtown in 2009. She began her post-graduate involvement with the MD/PhD program in 2010 when she created a Clinical Refresher course, designed for MD/PhD students re-entering their clinical years. Since then, she has continued to expand her role in mentoring and supporting MD/PhD students in their clinical years.
Dr. Bonsall has a strong interest in medical education at all levels, from medical students to faculty, and serves on multiple committees and task forces for undergraduate and graduate education, including two Curriculum Subcommittees, an Assessments task force, an LCME taskforce, and the Core Competency Intervention Committee for the Internal Medicine Residency program. She is an Associate Division Director and supervises faculty development for the Division of Hospital Medicine.
In addition to her clinical interests, Dr. Bonsall is a founding member and former chair of the Emory University School of Medicines Transitions of Care (TOC) task force. The TOC task force, which has been in place for five years, has developed and implemented a patient care transitions curriculum for the Internal Medicine residency training program. In addition, Dr. Bonsall also leads improvements in communication and patient care transitions at the faculty level, and speaks about this topic at regional and national meetings.
