Idelberto Badell
Overview
Dr. Badell received his MD from Baylor College of Medicine in 2006, after which he came to Emory for his general surgery residency and abdominal organ transplantation fellowship, which he completed in June 2015. Within this period of clinical training, he completed a pre-doctoral research fellowship in pathology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and a post-doctoral research fellowship in transplant immunology at the Emory Transplant Center under the direction of Dr. Christian Larsen. During his clinical fellowship he re-engaged with the Emory Transplant Center's research enterprise and focused on basic immunology and clinical trial investigations. His clinical practice consists primarily of kidney/pancreas transplantation.
In 2017, Dr. Badell received an NIH K08 award to study the mechanisms of DSA formation following kidney transplantation DSA plays a significant role in the development of chronic rejection and fibrosis and can lead to late renal allograft loss. Dr. Badell believes that gaining a better understanding of the cellular interactions responsible for DSA formation after transplantation could guide the optimization of current immunosuppressive strategies and the development of novel therapies to control its production. Dr. Badell received Emory's 1% Award later in the year because the proposal obtained the highest possible score from the NIH study section.
The American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) awarded Dr. Badell its 2018 Vanguard Prize for authoring the previous year's best clinical and basic research manuscript from a young investigator. The paper was "Selective CD28 Blockade Results in Superior Inhibition of Donor-Specific T Follicular Helper Cell and Antibody Responses Relative to CTLA4-Ig," which was first published electronically in August 2017 by the American Journal of Transplantation. Later in 2018, the ASTS Foundation awarded him the Astellas Faculty Development Grant for his proposal, "Circulating T Follicular Helper Cells as a Biomarker for Donor-Specific Alloantibodies in Transplantation." Dr. Badell was selected as the American Journal of Transplantation Editors Pick in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, he received the American College of Surgeons Jacobson Promising Investigator Award.
