Overview
Dr. Frank Minja is the Vice Chair for Global Health for the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences as well as Associate Chief of Radiology for Emory University Hospital and Medical Director, Diagnostic Imaging Hospital Service Line. Since taking on the role of Associate Chief of Radiology at Emory University Hospital, he has coordinated efforts across multiple imaging modalities and clinical divisions across six hospitals to increase patient access to radiology services by streamlining imaging offerings, developing expedited MRI protocols, and designing new pathways for patients to access imaging services. These steps have significantly reduced patient wait times, decreased length of stay, increased patient satisfaction, and enhanced the overall quality of care.
An associate professor in the Division of Neuroradiology, Dr. Minja's primary academic interests are vessel wall imaging. Recent innovactions include vessel wall enhancement in ruptured intracranial aneurysms and he is investigating whether vessel wall enhancement can predict aneurysm growth and/or rupture. As a member of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Education Committee, Dr. Minja is the primary liaison between the neuroradiology faculty and the residency program. In this role, he designed and streamlined the residency neuroradiology lecture curriculum, thereby improving resident success with what is one of the most challenging aspects of residency training.
An international leader for global health and radiology, Dr. Minja has been a driving force behind establishing radiology sub-specialty training programs in East Africa. His work includes co-founding in 2018 and serving as a current co-director of Road2IR, which connects academic radiology centers with establishing interventional radiology residency and fellowship training programsin Africa. Road2IR established East Africas first accredited IR training program in Tanzania: the masters of science (MSc) in interventional radiology program at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). The first trainees enrolled in October 2019, the same year Emory Radiology sent its first faculty and residents to co-learn and train with them. In 2024, Road2IR gained accreditation for its second training program, in Uganda. Dr. Minja also co-founded with Dr. Jay Shah Emorys RAD-AID Chapter, which answers the need for more radiologists and imaging technology in the resource-limited regions of the world. Both organizations ensure Emory Radiologys efforts build in-country capacity to expand access to care and achieve health equity.
Dr. Minja provided commentary on COVID-19 trends in East Africa during the pandemic to The New York Times, Voice of America, British Broadcasting Corporation, and Deutsche Welle. He has organized and moderated over 20 public webinars on healthcare topics and healthcare capacity building in East Africa.
For these significant endeavors, Dr. Minja was awarded the Outstanding Community Impact Award by the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in November 2024 and the Emory School of Medicine's Distinguished Service Award in October 2024.
