Overview
Eric attended the University of Rochester, where he earned Bachelors degrees in both Biochemistry and Economics in 1994. He pursued the former at Northwestern University, earning a Ph.D. in 1999 in the Inter-departmental Biological Sciences (IBiS) Program. At Northwestern, Eric was the first graduate student of Dr. Theodore S. Jardetzky (now in the Department of Structural Biology at the Stanford University School of Medicine).
Upon completion of his Ph.D., Eric became a postdoctoral fellow supported by an Arthritis Foundation fellowship in Dr. Roy A. Mariuzzas laboratory at the Center for Advanced Research in Biotechnology-University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (CARB-UMBI; now the Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology at the University of Maryland). He was promoted to Assistant Professor non-Tenure Track three years later and was awarded his first NIH grant shortly thereafter.
In 2004, Eric joined the faculty of the Boston Biomedical Research Institute (BBRI) as a Scientist (Tenure-Track Assistant Professor equivalent). He was promoted to Principal Scientist (Associate Professor equivalent) in 2009. In 2011, he moved his laboratory to the Institute of Human Virology and Departments of Medicine and of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, where he was, most recently, Professor of Medicine and Co-Director of the Basic Science Division of the Institute of Human Virology.
In 2019, Eric moved to the Emory University School of Medicine, where he is now Professor and Chair of the Department of Biochemistry.
