Erica Brownfield MD
Overview
Dr. Brownfield graduated from the University of California in Los Angeles with a BS in Biology. She attended the Chicago Medical School in 1996 and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1999. She joined the Division of General Internal Medicine at Emory in 1999 as a clinician educator. Since 1999, Dr. Brownfield has been actively involved in the medical school and house staff programs. She served as the co-director of the Internal Medicine Clerkship from 2000-2006, before she became the director in 2006. Dr. Brownfield was an inaugural class member of the Woodruff Leadership Academy of Emory University in 2003.
Dr. Brownfield's research interests include health communication, particularly the role of the media, in health outcomes and health behaviors, and medical student education. She has received several grants- institutional, regional and national for her research. Her interest in medical student education research has grown to include evaluation of students, curriculum development, and faculty development. She has presented her work at multiple regional, national, and international conferences and has published several articles in leading medical education journals.
Dr. Brownfield spends 3 months a year as an attending on the General Medicine Wards at Grady Memorial Hospital and is also a supervising attending in the Primary Care Center at Grady. She also has her own faculty practice at Grady, where she takes care of private patients. Dr. Brownfield enjoys teaching the medical students and housestaff. While at Emory, she has received numerous teaching awards including the Dean's Teaching Award, the Annette Bernard Outpatient Teaching Award, and the Primary Care Clinician Teacher Award. She was recognized in 2004 regionally by winning the Southern Society of General Internal Medicine Award for Clinician Educator of the Year.
Dr. Brownfield is an assistant dean of Medical Education for the Emory University School of Medicine. She has served on numerous committees for the medical school, including the Admissions Committee, the Clerkship Directors Committee, the Progress and Promotions Committee, the Executive Curriculum committee, and the Curriculum Planning Committee. In the Department of Medicine, she founded the Executive Curriculum Committee and has served on the Department of Medicine Education Committee, the Faculty Development Advisory Committee, the Administration Restructuring Committee, the Strategic Implementation Planning Committee, and on the Search Committee for the division chief of General Internal Medicine. She furthermore served as the President of the University Senate and Chair of the Faculty Council at Emory and is a member of the Provost Advisory Committee, the Faculty Advisory Committee for Finance and Administration, and the Southern Association of College and Schools Steering Committee.

Research
Focus
- My prior research focused on a) communication of health information to those with low health literacy, and b) the impact of media on medicine. My current research focuses on a) defining the roles and responsibilities of vice chairs for education, and b) medical education, particularly the evaluation of students and the learning environment.
