Dustin T. Smith, MD, SFHM
Dr. Dustin T. Smith is an academic hospitalist and Section Chief for Education in Medical Specialty at the Atlanta VA Health Care System. Dr. Smith is an Associate Program Director at the Atlanta VA for the J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Smith carries the clinical distinction of "Distinguished Physician" by the Emory Department of Medicine for his clinical contributions.
In 2013, Dr. Smith was awarded the Emory Department of Medicine Academy of Medical Educators TEACH 12 Award and was inducted into the third class of the Department's Academy of Medical Educators. Dr. Smith was awarded Clinical Teacher of the Year by the Emory Physician Assistant Program in 2015 and 2016, the Educator Impact Award by the Emory Department of Medicine in 2016, Golden Apple teaching awards in 2017 and 2020, and Joyce P. Doyle Award by the Emory J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency in 2020. Additionally, Dr. Smith has received awards for service (at the VA), leadership, education, teaching, and mentorship by the Emory Division of Hospital Medicine.
Dr. Smith is co-director for the annual Southern Hospital Medicine Conference since 2012. He is as a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine's (SHM) Education Committee and the Society of General Internal Medicine's Academic Hospitalist Commission. Dr. Smith previously served on the SHM Annual Conference Committee including selection as assistant course director for SHM's annual meeting Hospital Medicine 2018 and as course director for Hospital Medicine 2019.
Dr. Smith is a graduate of Emory University School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of California, San Francisco, with distinction in the Primary Medical Education (PRIME) Program where he also was awarded the G. Thomas Evans Teaching Award as a resident. His interests include medical education, evidence-based medicine, and various topics in cardiology for which he has several peer-reviewed publications as well as local, regional, and national presentations.
