Overview

Gerald Staton Jr., MD, attended Georgia Tech, receiving a B.S. in Chemistry in 1972. He graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 1976 and was honored as the summa cum laude graduate of his class. Internship and residency in internal medicine were completed at Stanford University and pulmonary fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard University. He came to Emory in 1981 as an Instructor of Medicine. He was prompted the Assistant Professor of Medicine in 1982, to Associate Professor of Medicine in 1987 and to Professor of Medicine in 1993.

Dr. Staton has been interested in interstitial lung diseases since he came to Emory. He has been a sought after consultant in that area for physicians and patients from all over Georgia and the Southeast. He has been selected annually as one of the Best Doctors in America since 1996.

Dr. Staton previously served as the Medical Director of the Long Term Acute Care Hospital of Wesley Woods Center. He was head of Pulmonary and Critical Care at Emory Crawford Long Hospital and served as the Division Director of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine within the Department of Medicine. In addition, he has held leadership roles in several state and national organizations.

Dr. Staton has been teaching medical students, housestaff, and pulmonary fellows for more than 30 years. He has received two Golden Apple Awards from the medical housestaff for excellence in clinical teaching. Recently he received a teaching award from the pulmonary fellows.

Dr. Statons research interest has been in the treatment of interstitial lung diseases such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and sarcoidosis.
