Overview
Dr. Powell originally trained at Emory University in Internal Medicine and then completed a combined fellowship in the sub specialties of pulmonary and critical care medicine. She is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary, and critical care medicine.
Dr. Powell spent nine years doing both outpatient pulmonary medicine and inpatient pulmonary and critical care medicine in the Wellstar health system in Marietta, GA. There she provided care for critically ill patients from the time they presented to the emergency room at Kennestone, Wellstars tertiary care hospital, throughout their acute hospital course, then through their rehabilitation at Windy Hill Longterm Acute Care Hospital, and finally as they returned to the outpatient setting. This gave her a broad understanding of both the impact of critical illness on patients and their families and the resilience and resolve required to overcome such an illness. She decided to focus her career exclusively on critical care in 2008 when she became an Intensivist at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, GA. Between Wellstar and at Piedmont, Dr. Powell gained extensive experience caring for critically ill patients in the medical, surgical, cardiac, and neurosurgical ICUs.
While at Piedmont Healthcare, she developed an interest in advanced methods of cardiopulmonary support, including mechanical support devices and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. She assisted in developing the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program at Piedmont, which ran its first patient on an Ecmo circuit in 2008.
Dr. Powell decided to return to academic medicine in 2014 when she was presented the opportunity to assist Emory with the implementation of its ECMO program and with the care of its critically ill patients. Since that time, she has continued to work in the medical and surgical ICUs, as well as the electronic ICU, which monitors the critical care units of 5 hospitals at night and on weekends.
