Head shot of Barbara McElhanon

Overview

My research examines the prevalence and topography of clinical concerns and interventions in children with autism as well as children with feeding disorders with goal of creating better treatments and standardizing care. This includes meta-analyses, prospective data collection, as well as randomized blinded clinical controlled trial for novel treatments.

Academic Appointment

  • Assistant Professor, Marcus Autism Center, Division of Autism & Related Disabilities, Emory University School of Medicine
  • Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, Emory University School of Medicine

Education

Degrees

  • MD from Emory School of Medicine
  • BS- Business from Georgia Institute of Technology

Research

Focus

  • There are concerns about possible gastrointestinal (GI) problems in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), yet the specificity of these concerns is not well researched. My research is focused on prevalence of these disorders with plans to investigate related immune abnormalities, mucosal inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the gut microbiome.
