Anne Tomolo MD, MPH
Overview
Anne Tomolo, MD, MPH, is the Co-Director of the Chief Resident for Quality and Safety and Advanced Fellowship in Patient Safety programs with the VHA National Center for Patient Safety and an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. She has served as the Associate Chief of Staff for Education and the Interim Deputy Chief of Staff at the Atlanta VA. She is the former Director of the Quality Scholars Advanced Fellowship Program, Chief Resident in Quality and Patient Safety Program, and Cognitive Disorder Specialty Care Education Center of Excellence at the Atlanta VA.
Dr. Tomolo has served as a member of the National VA Learners' Perception Steering Committee from 2000-2008 and National VA Emergency Medicine Field Advisory Committee from 2005-2008. She was selected to the inaugural group to represent VA at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's Managing Hospital Operations Course in 2006 and has served as a faculty member, planning committee member and coach for local, regional, and national VA system redesign initiatives related to patient flow. Currently she is a faculty member of VHA Systems Redesign Flow Academy.
Dr. Tomolo is nationally recognized for her research in curriculum development and assessment in the graduate medical education competencies of Systems-Based Practice and Practice-Based Learning and Improvement (PBLI). She received VA Health Services Research and Development Merit funding to develop and evaluate a PBLI Tool to assess resident competence and guide curriculum development in this arena.
Dr. Tomolo has served on numerous national, regional, and local VA councils, committees, and workgroups, as well as committees in Emory School of Medicine, Department of Medicine, and Division of General Internal Medicine.
Clinical
Dr. Tomolo has practiced as a general internist since 1999 in the primary care, emergency department and inpatient settings. Currently her clinical work is in the inpatient setting.
Teaching
Since her transfer to Emory her teaching at Emory School of Medicine has primarily involved supervision and teaching on the inpatient medicine wards at the Atlanta VAMC. In April 2012 she participated in small group capstone teaching for 4th year medical students on handoffs and transitions in care.
She served as a faculty member of Emory Healthcare's Quality Academy Practical Methods for Healthcare Improvement Program and National Veterans Health Administration's Office of System Redesign's Flow Academy, both of which are interprofessional training programs.
In her roles at the National Center for Patient Safety she leads the redesign of the Chief Resident in Quality and Safety and Advanced Fellowship in Patient Safety programs.

Research
Dr. Tomolo's research interests include health outcomes, implementation science, system redesign, and medical education. Her work in education and implementation resulted in VA HSRD Merit (Co-PI) on the development and evaluation of a Practice-Based Learning and Improvement Tool to assess resident competence and guide curriculum development in this arena, and her service a Co-Investigator and Facilitator of the Heart Failure Quality Improvement Committee and Chair of the Systems Redesign/Improvement Curriculum and Advancement Team for the VHA Systems Redesign Improvement Capability Grant entitled "Developing localized disease registries to enhance population management: An importable model for infrastructure change."
Her current research efforts are in quality improvement knowledge and skill assessment and measuring safety in virtual care.
