Head shot of Andrew Feola

Overview

Andrew J. Feola, PhD, joined the Emory Eye Center in September 2021 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology. He holds an appointment as a Research Biologist at the Joseph M Cleland Atlanta VAMC in the Center for Visual & Neurocognitive Rehabilitation (CVNR) and is program faculty in Biomedical Engineering and Bioengineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

He is also a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). At Emory, Dr. Feola is a member of the Emory Eye Center Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. Dr. Feola is also part of the Outreach and Education Committee and Internal Steering Group at the VAMC.

Dr. Feolas research focuses on glaucoma from a womens health perspective. As a laboratory, we have a particular interest in understanding how menopause and estrogen signaling play a role in developing ocular diseases and visual impairments. Our primary focus is on glaucoma and the role of sex-specific risk factors for developing this disease. We take a continuing diverse approach spanning experimental biomechanics, computational modeling, and developing deep learning tools to assess how menopause is related to ocular health. We also incorporate electrophysiology and in vivo imaging approaches to understand how visual impairments progress over time in experimental models. Our goal is to gain a deeper understanding of how menopause relates to the pathophysiology of ocular diseases and eventually develop therapeutic targets based on this insight.
