Allen Beck MD
Overview
Allen D. Beck, MD, was appointed director of Emory Eye Center on June 3, 2019 and F. Phinizy Calhoun, Sr. Chair in Ophthalmology on June 1, 2020. He is the former director, Section of Glaucoma for Emory Eye Center. His clinical focus is on diagnosis and management of pediatric and adult glaucoma, including surgical treatment of cataract. His research interests include diagnosis and management of pediatric glaucoma, clinical studies of adult glaucoma therapies, pediatric cataract, and glaucoma compliance.
National Recognition
Dr. Beck was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society in 1989. He won the Clinical Teaching Award, presented by Emory Eye Center residents in 1999, and again in 2002. That same year, he was presented the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Achievement Award and received the Senior Achievement Award in 2017. Dr. Beck joined the Emory Millipub Club in 2017 and received the Emory Healthcare Provider Excellence Award that same year. Since 2009, he is consistently named as a Top Doctor in Atlanta magazines special issue. He is a member of American Academy of Ophthalmology, The American Medical Association, the Medical Association of Georgia, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the American Glaucoma Society, the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology and the Emory Eye Alumni Association. In 2020, Dr. Beck was appointed the F. Phinizy Calhoun, Sr. Chair in Ophthalmology by Emory University School of Medicine.
Dr. Beck is a member of the Executive Committee for the Childhood Glaucoma Research Network and has served on the Steering Committee for Advanced Glaucoma Intervention Study (AGIS), the American Glaucoma Society Patient Care Committee and Practice Guidelines Subcommittee and on the editorial board of JAAPOS (Journal of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus).
