Andrew Adams
Overview
Dr. Adams joined the Department of Surgery after finishing his Emory transplant surgery fellowship. An alumnus of Emory's MD/PhD program, he completed his graduate work in immunology under the direction of Dr. Chris Larsen and Dr. Tom Pearson, moved on to Massachusetts General Hospital to complete his general surgery training, then returned to Emory for his transplant fellowship. When back at Emory, he re-integrated into the Emory Transplant Center's research laboratory and focused on basic immunology as well as translational models at Emory National Primate Center. As a faculty member, his clinical time is divided between the liver and kidney services, while his research efforts are focused on transplant immunology. His highly active laboratory is studying the immune response to transplanted organs, with a focus on therapeutics, diagnostics, xenotransplantation, and outcomes research.
Academic Appointment
- Associate Professor of Surgery, Division of Transplantation, Department of Surgery, Emory University School of Medicine
Education
Degrees
- MD from Emory University School of Medicine - Magna Cum Laude
- BS from Brigham Young University
- Doctor of Philosophy from Emory University
Research
Focus
-
The development of novel strategies to promote transplantation tolerance.
Dr. Adams' attention to the area of transplantation tolerance is particularly focused on the interplay between viral infection, immune memory, and the allo-immune response. A more recent research concern has been the application of novel immunosuppressive strategies in large animal (pig-to-non-human primate) xenotransplantation.
