Medical Innovation Track

Goals, Learning Objectives, & Outcome

Goals

This 24-month track will provide participants with a foundation of knowledge to participate in entrepreneurship and design for innovate technologies.

Learning Objectives

  1. To acquire basic knowledge of validated medical innovation development pathways
  2. To understand basics of entrepreneurship needed to bring an idea to market
  3. To acquire a basic understanding of regulatory and reimbursement models that impact bring innovation to fruition
  4. To apply this knowledge to working with a team to develop an innovation project
  5. To apply this knowledge in critically evaluating proposed innovative medical devices and technologies

Outcome

Upon successful participation and completion of this track, residents will be awarded a certificate of distinction in Medical Innovation from Emory University School of Medicine.

      • Coulter Program Series
      • Kaufman FastTrac course
      • Monthly seminar
  • Experiences
    • Participation as a clinical mentor in the Biomedical Engineering Society Coulter College Program
    • Evaluation of technologies with the Coulter Program and Office of Technology Transfer
  • Mentorship
    • Healthcare Innovation Mentors from Emory and Georgia Tech as well as local industry
    • Faculty Mentor from home department
  • Capstone Project
    • On a problem area of your selection, mentor a group of undergraduate biomedical engineering students through their Capstone course to development of a novel medical device or technology and submit disclosures of invention and possibly patent applications through the Office of Technology Transfer

Eligibility & General Requirements

Eligibility

Application to the Medical Innovation Residency Track is open to all rising PGY2 or higher residents or fellows in good standing with their graduate medical education training program.

General Requirements

  • Residents/Fellows in the pathway should anticipate using at least 4 weeks of elective time (distributed over 2 years) to complete pathway requirements.
  • Residents/Fellows must remain in good standing with the residency/fellowship program.
  • Residents/Fellows must maintain regular attendance at monthly lecture series.
  • Residents/Fellows must identify a mentor from their clinical department who will work with them throughout the program and attend program events when needed
  • Residents/Fellows will complete a longitudinal innovation project. This work must be shared through abstract/poster presentations at conferences, publications in academic journals, and/or patent submission
  • Residents/Fellows will have the opportunity to share their work to hospital leadership at our annual graduation event.
  • Residents/Fellows must ensure to adhere to residency work-hour policies. 

Application Process

Applicants should:

  • Submit a personal statement indicating their interest in medical innovation and this track.  Please include any particular area(s) of interest as well as information about past training or experiences in engineering, informatics, technology, design, and entrepreneurship as well as any related scholarship or research experience.  The application must include full title, year in residency, and contact information. The statement should be a maximum of 2 pages.
  • The application must include a statement of support from the program director confirming eligibility and a confirmation of commitment to meaningful participation in attending all curriculum sessions.

Each year, please submit your application to Dr. Ackerman’s administrative assistant Rikka English, no later than April 30 for consideration in the cohort starting in July.
