Summer Science Academy Day Program offers an exciting and engaging hands-on experience for passionate incoming 9th and 10th grade students with an interest in sciences: biology, health care, medicine, or related STEM fields. The 2025 Academy will take place in-person where you and your Academy mates will learn a variety of topics such as:

The 2025 Summer Science Academy will be held in-person, on the Emory University main campus.
There are 3 session options to choose from when applying:
To provide high school students from traditionally underrepresented minority backgrounds the opportunity to develop a better understanding and appreciation of science by exposing them to an educational environment that is conducive to learning, motivating, challenging, and fun.
Core Beliefs
Science is all around us and a vital part of our lives.
All students are able to learn sophisticated principles of science and should be encouraged to enroll in science courses in high school.
Science knowledge is achievable for students from underrepresented minority backgrounds (African Americans, Hispanic, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders).
Students who are female are capable of and should be encouraged to enroll in science courses and pursue careers requiring a background in science and technology.
With many other career options available, the number of African American and Hispanic American males in science related fields is dwindling. Male students from these backgrounds should be encouraged to pursue careers in science and technology.
It is OK to be smart and be a high achiever, especially in the science, math, and technology areas.
Fees, Forms, and Deadlines
Registration for the 2025 Academy will open in January 2025.

Forms:
A Release of Liability form is required.
A Media Release form is required.
Attendees and Parents/Guardians will receive a link to the forms to sign electronically after successfully registering online.
Steps:
Register via Emory Trumba by clicking the session of your choosing above.
Select the session you prefer for your student.
Complete registration and make payment.
After registration and payment is submitted, an email will be sent to complete mandatory forms for enrollment. If a desposit was made, you will also receive an invoice for the remaining balance.

For over 25 years, Summer Science Academy has been bringing Atlanta-area high school students from underrepresented backgrounds in medicine onto campus to open their eyes to the wonders of science. Now, a former participant from the 2011 group named Daeja Hamm is a second-year medical student at Emory.

What are the hours of the Academy?
9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday
How many students are in each session?
20-25
Do students stay on campus for the duration of the Academy?
No, Summer Science Academy does not have a residential component. Students must be dropped off and picked up each day.
Is the Academy open to students in the 9-12 grades?
Summer Science Academy is only open to students who will be an incoming 9th or 10th grade student. We do not accept incoming 11th or 12th grade students.
Can I switch my child from one session to another?
We prefer not to make changes if they can be avoided. However, we understand changes do arise. If space is available, we will make the proper accommodations.
Are refunds available?
Yes, refunds are available through May 2, 2025 - $50 cancellation fee applies. If refund desired after May 2, there will be a $200 cancellation fee.
Who will be teaching my student?
Qualified 1st and 2nd year medical students, health professions students, and/or teachers who have agreed to spend their summer cultivating the next generation of medical and health professionals.
Are students responsible for their own supplies?
We supply all of the materials, supplies, and fun for participants!
What are COVID-19 protocals for participation?
We strongly encourage that all students be fully vaccinated. Though not a requirement, full vaccination helps reduce the transmission of the virus among fellow students. We strongly suggest that students wear masks.
What are the considerations for out-of-state students?
Out-of-state students must have a guardian available and responsible for pick-up and drop-off, medical decisions in the event of a health concern, and ensure that the student has lunch each day.
Will students be provided lunch?
No, students are to bring their personal lunch each day. Lunches should be in a container that can preserve the integrity of the food items until lunch time.
