Head shot of Kiran Hebbar

Overview

Kiran Hebbar, MD, FCCM, is the Medical Director of Safety & Simulation at Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta and Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. Through simulation-based clinical system testing (SbCST), Dr. Hebbars team is working to improve the bedside clinical practice of medical staff, test and improve systems of care in situ, and develop novel tools and systematic approaches to assessing safety of clinical spaces. By diagnosing and correcting the system of care before integrating and training teams into practice, patient care is more safe, efficient and reflects work-as-done state.

Dr. Hebbars team has developed novel tools for integrating simulation into designs of a new facility as well as renovations in existing clinical spaces. In 2019, Dr. Hebbar led simulation-based hospital design testing (SbHDT) for the Arthur M. Blank Hospital. This was the largest cardboard city pre-construction simulation project conducted to date with a focus on evidence-based design principles.

Research interests
Translational Work System Simulations improves elements of the work system helping address underlying human factors and in term improving processes and outcomes of care. Another major focus is the use of Simulation-based hospital design testing to improve the healthcare environment, which plays great influence in the work system and directly and indirectly influences process and patient outcomes.
