For Residents/Fellows

The Graduate Medical Education (GME) leadership are committed to creating an inclusive and equitable learning and working environment for our 1,300+ trainees in over 25 core residency programs and 80+ fellowship programs.

Actionable Education Initiative

An educational portfolio for learners, staff and faculty that infuses principles and competencies to move from awareness of internal biases and external forces of marginalization and oppression into learning about their historical and psychological origins and effects and on to growing into anti-racist allies who actively work for and prize diversity, equity and inclusion. The resources are available in four domains: anti-racism, implicit bias education, from bystander to upstander and history.

Pride Affinity Group

An affinity group for trainees who identify as LGBTQ+ and allies hosted by the Graduate Medical Education (GME) DEI unit.

Diversity and Inclusion Week

A school-wide celebration of the broad ranges of identities and experiences that make up our diverse community. The week offers lectures, breakout sessions, power presentations, and social activities.

Juneteenth Programming

An annual film screening and discussion on the historic struggles to secure equal and adequate access to healthcare for all Americans.

Hamilton E. Holmes Memorial Lecture

An annual lecture series named for the first African-American to enter and graduate from Emory University School of Medicine.

Instructor/Presenter Opportunities

The Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) offers opportunities for residents and fellows to engage with learners interested in pursuing the field of medicine at all stages of their educational career. Residents and fellows can serve as instructors or presenters in the following OMA enrichment and pipeline programs:

  • EPiC, a longitudinal program for high school students
  • Summer Science Academy, a summer camp for 9th and 10th graders
  • EmPREP, a webinar series for pre-med students
  • HealthPREP, an 8-week experience for low-income and first-generation college students
  • EMPACT, a mentoring program for Emory URiM medical students
  • Program representatives for recruitment efforts at local fairs and national conferences

Mentor Opportunities

Individual departments offer research and mentorship opportunities for pre-medical and pre-clinical medical students interested in specific specialties. Residents and fellows are encouraged to offer their mentorship. Some examples of current programs include:

  • Student Trauma and Resuscitation Research (STaR) Program
  • Summer Undergraduate Program in Emory Renal Research (SUPERR)
  • Orthopaedic Surgery Summer Scholars Program
