National Association of Medical Minority Educators Conference 2022: Kudos to our ESOM colleagues Allen Lee, MAT, Nancy DeSousa, MD, MPH and Janice Harewood, PhD for their engagement at the NAMME Conference. Of note, Allen Lee presented a poster entitled "Using Multiple Touchpoints to Improve URiM Recruitment", which outlines the philosophy and the specific approach that the Office of Multicultural Affairs has taken to recruit and retain students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds. For example, each targeted student will receive at least 10 touchpoints related to DEI during the application and matriculation process. 40% of these come from outside of the Office of Multicultural Affairs. This SOM wide community approach has yielded > 25% URiM student populations for the past 5 years.

But today they’re central, according to the authors. In recent decades we’ve witnessed a surge in the proportion of people whose identities are deeply informed by their political allegiances and who believe they need to bring those identities to work.
