Implicit Bias Education

Implicit Bias Training

This program is offered by the Office of Equity and Inclusion and uses over 30 certified implicit bias facilitators who engage with session participants to explain the impact implicit bias has on workplace decision-making, the concept of microaggressions and how to mitigate bias in research, education and practice. Use the link above to request a session for your department, center, learners, etc.

Implicit Bias Training

Implicit Bias Training Pre-Reading

To prime participants for our Implicit Bias Training, we offer a pre-reading which includes three short articles. The first article by the Harvard Business Review is titled "3 Ways to Make Less Biased Decisions." The second article is from the American Medical Association and is titled "Reducing Bias in Academic Search Committees." The last article from The New York Times is titled "A Fix for Gender Bias in Health Care? Check." Access all three articles here.

Kirwan Institute Implicit Bias Module Series

The Ohio State University's Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity offers this five-module series to introduce insights into how our minds operate and help you understand the origins of implicit associations. You will also uncover some of your own biases and learn strategies for addressing them.

NIH Implicit Bias Training Course

Offered by the National Institutes, this three-module course is designed to help users learn what bias is, how to recognize it and how to minimize its impact. It expands on the original two-module course “NIH Implicit Bias” by providing users with knowledge and strategies to create psychological safety and enhance employee engagement to foster an inclusive workplace culture.

Implicit Association Tests

Above is the link to the Implicit Association Test (IAT), which people have used as one tool to assess their implicit preference based on sociodemographics such as race, gender, and sexuality. Be advised that this is one way in which we can assess our biases and should not be misused or taken out of context without additional Implicit bias training/education. After clicking the link above, log in as a guest, acknowledge "I wish to proceed" and follow the instructions to complete the race IAT, gender-career IAT, sexuality IAT and disability IAT. If you are interested in doing others, you might consider the religion IAT, Asian American IAT and weight IAT.

ELMS Communication for Inclusion Course

Available in the Emory Learning Management System, this course includes three parts: communication for inclusion, engagement with diversity and influence of unconscious bias.

Communication for inclusion educates the learner on inclusive practices and communication.

Engagement with diversity educates the learner about specific aspects of diversity and inclusion, uses the iceberg model to illustrate how some aspects of diversity are not readily observable and examines how diversity resistance, reactions to difference, assumptions and the ladder of inference can interfere with student engagement.

Influence of unconscious bias* informs the learners about unconscious and implicit bias and how it influences our decisions and opinions on a daily basis. The course prepares the learner to better recognize and disrupt their own bias, as well as understand how bias influences our Emroy community. As the learner, you will get an expanded understanding of the diversity and inclusion framework and a heightened awareness of the lived experiences and how diversity can be a strength in our Emory community.

*Note: We have moved from unconscious bias to implicit bias in our work in the School of Medicine.
