Emory School of Medicine is pleased to announce the opening of a new Global Health and Equity Office (GLOBE). Led by Professor of Pediatrics and Global Health Dr. Parminder Suchdev, the Global Health and Equity Office aims to improve the health of people who are medically underserved worldwide through faculty, staff and trainee involvement in sustainable and equitable global health education, research, and clinical care partnerships.
Global health is a strategic priority at Emory University. Dr. Suchdev is Associate Director of the Emory Global Health Institute (EGHI), founded in 2006 as part of the University’s strategic plan to develop a strong academic infrastructure in global health. EGHI has led the establishment of numerous successful multidisciplinary education and research programs.
Within the School of Medicine, faculty and staff lead a range of initiatives including clinical outreach, research partnerships, and global health training and education. “Our vision is to build upon this strong record of global health excellence by improving coordination and avoiding duplication of efforts, ensuring equitable partnerships, and prioritizing high impact activities,” said Dr. Suchdev.
An effective global health strategy will not only benefit patients abroad, but can improve patient care locally, provide opportunities for high-impact research and increase non-traditional sources of grant funding. And increasingly, students and trainees are seeking global health training. “Global health” was the number 4 most-searched term on the SOM website in FY21.
With input from faculty, staff and learners across the SOM, the office will lead development and implementation of a unified, ethical and sustainable strategy for global health impact. Leveraging faculty and staff expertise across the SOM will be critical, as the office aims to tap into existing strengths in basic sciences, engineering and social sciences.
“Our focus on global health and equity spans all three missions,” said Dean Vikas Sukhatme. “As we develop the next generation of expert clinicians, bold scientists, educators, entrepreneurs, and policy makers—we are developing agents for positive change, both at Emory and around the world.”
