Overview
Dr. Heron joined the Emory University School of Medicine faculty in 1996. She received her MD at Howard University College of Medicine and completed her emergency medicine residency at King Drew Medical Center. Prior to starting medical school, she received her MPH at Hunter College in New York.
Dr. Heron is a recognized editor of two textbooks and the recipient of many awards including the American College of Emergency Physician's National Faculty Teaching Award, the Woman in Medicine Award from the National Medical Association Council on The Concerns of Women Physicians, the Gender Justice Award from The Georgia Commission on Family Violence and the Outstanding Woman Award at Emory University School of Medicine.
Dr. Heron is a member of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the National Medical Association. Her research interests include equity and inclusion in medicine, violence prevention, and wellness and well-being for the healthcare profession.
She is currently serving as the Chair-Elect for the Association of American Medical Colleges - Group on Diversity & Inclusion

Research
Focus
- My research interest examines domestic violence, specifically intimate partner violence (IPV) in the health care arena. I am interested in educating and training healthcare professionals to maximize their response to IPV and creating pertinent curriculum. My research interests also include the relationship between child maltreatment and IPV, as well as suicidality as it relates to IPV.
