Carlos del Rio (medicine) will serve as interim dean for the School of Medicine and chief academic officer for Emory Healthcare. His roles will begin on March 1, when Dean Vikas Sukhatme steps down to return to the faculty. Learn more.

Philip Shayne Named Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Educate and ACGME Designated Institutional Official 

Philip Shayne (emergency medicine) will provide leadership and oversight for the 115 ACGME-accredited residency programs at Emory which train nearly 1,400 residents and fellows. Read the full announcement.

S. Sam Lim Receives Grant to Reduce Health Disparities in Lupus Care

Sam Lim (medicine) leads a group of researchers examining lupus. The group received a CDC-funded U01 grant of $4.5 million to study racial health disparities related to lupus over five years.

 

Tracey Henry Appointed to AMA Council on Legislation

Tracey Henry (medicine) was appointed by the American Medical Association's Board of Trustees to serve on their AMA Council on Legislation. The Council on Legislation (COL) reviews proposed federal legislation and recommends appropriate action in accordance with AMA policy.

 

Emory University and Grady Health Awarded $4.4 mil to Study Car Crashes

The Injury Prevention Research Center at Emory University, Grady Health System and collaborators at the University of Michigan have been awarded $4.4 million for five years, to study motor vehicle crashes in metro Atlanta that result in injuries treated at Grady. This award supports Emory and Grady's continued role as a Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network Center, and will also study crashes involving pedestrians struck by vehicles. Read more.

Recognizing and celebrating faculty members is an important part of Emory’s culture. At the third annual Emory at Grady Faculty Awards, we honored 64 individuals across many departments within the School of Medicine. This ceremony recognized 7 Emory at Grady-specific awards that highlight the incredible work by Emory faculty who work on Grady’s campus.

Advocacy Award (Tie)

The Emory at Grady Advocacy Award recognizes a faculty member’s significant contribution in the domain of advocacy. Advocacy is defined as seeking structural and policy change on behalf of patients, learners, and communities in ways that promote health equity, advance medical education, and/ or improve patient care and outcomes.

Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Faculty Development Course

Deadline to apply: March 31

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is an emerging patient assessment tool that can be utilized for diagnostic and procedural purposes. Clinicians in a wide variety of specialties can utilize POCUS to improve bedside diagnostic assessments as well as improved safety and efficacy for procedural guidance. This half-day course will be held on June 23, 2023. The deadline to apply is March 31, 2023. Apply here.

New Incidental Findings Policy

Incidental findings, are incidentally discovered mass or lesions, detected by an imaging modality performed for an unrelated reason. A new policy was development to improve communication about these results and patient care. All inpatient, ED, and ambulatory discharges will now require completion of family patient communication and incidental finding documentation and completion of the BPA before the discharge order or visit can be signed. Connect and Chat Sessions

The Faculty Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) offers a weekly Connect and Chat session to help you process the emotional impact of ongoing societal stressors and traumatic events with others. These sessions will provide a safe space to unpack, share and discuss healthy strategies for coping while navigating life's daily pressures. Sessions are offered on Tuesdays via Zoom.  Learn more.
