About
The Emory Pediatrics and Pathology R38 StARR program offers in-depth training in research fundamentals, a tailored mentored experience, and customizable research paths to support residents pursuing clinician-investigator careers no matter their current research experience. This NHLBI-funded pathway ensures residents have between 12-18 months of 80% protected research time through extending residency by one year. During this time, residents are matched with a mentor, form a Scholarship Oversight Committee, and complete a research project. R38 residents also receive $40,000 in research funds over the course of their program, in addition to $3,000 per year in travel funding.
Key program components include customized research curriculum, Individualized Development Plans, presentation and publication experience, and 1-on-1 writing assistance, including to prepare a K38 application. K38s are NIH career development awards to fund research during fellowship and are only available to R38 residents.
Residents with an interest in this program are encouraged to contact Dr. John Roback to discuss.
R38 Eligibility Requirements:

How to Apply
All R38 applications must include:
1) Statement of Research Interests (1 page, single-spaced, Arial 11 font, with .5" margins). Research statements must include:
- Relevant past research experiences (if no prior experience please state what has peaked your current interest).
- Current areas of research interest (This can be general such as a specialty area, disease, or topic such as drug discovery, or more specific if known)
- Specific interests in the R38 program, including potential mentors, if known.
- Future career plans related to research (how do you envision yourself in the 5-10 years after residency?)
2) Updated curriculum vitae (CV)
3) Letters of Support - Letters of support should come from past or current mentors. Your letters do not have to come from the person who will be your R38 mentor. For example, you could include letters from your current residency program director and your medical school mentor. Only 1 letter of support is required, but 2 may be submitted.
