EMORY UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
OFFICE OF CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION
Guidelines for Course Approval

A CME activity with Category 1 credit is governed by the directives of the Emory University School of Medicine Policies, Objectives and Operational Guidelines for Continuing Medical Education; The Essentials Areas of the Accreditation council for Continuing Medical Education; The Association of American Medical Colleges Guidelines for Faculty Involvement in Commercially Supported Continuing Medical Education; and the Food and Drug Administration Draft Policy Statement on Industry Supported Scientific and Education Activities. The following steps must be followed to obtain Emory School of Medicine sponsorship and Category 1 Credit for departmental programs.

1. Contact the Office of Continuing Medical Education (OCME) as early as possible to clear proposed dates for the CME activity and request an Application Packet.

2. The Application Packet contains a CME Activity Planning and Approval Form and information for CME approval. It should be reviewed carefully by the Course Director and the departmental staff CME liaison.

3. The Course Approval Form must be signed by the department Chair and returned to the OCME with the following supporting documents at least six (6) months prior to the proposed date for the activity:

1. A draft of the program agenda which includes faculty (with addresses) and topics.
2. Documentation of how the need for this program was determined.
3. List of learning objectives indicating knowledge or skills to be gained by participants.

4. The Course Approval Form will be reviewed by the Executive Director of CME for compliance with the governing policies. The Course Director will be notified of approval or disapproval and, if applicable, a planning meeting will be scheduled.

5. The Course Director should meet with the OCME at least 6 months prior to the proposed date to begin detailed planning for the activity. A Course Coordinator will be assigned by the OCME at this time and the Course Director and the departmental staff liaison should both plan to attend. A Course Planning Packet, which contains forms and examples, will be given to the Course Director. Discussion will include program structure, financing, and the required documentation necessary to obtain CME credit for the educational activity.

6. Educational Grants are encouraged. Funds from industry should be in the form of an "Unrestricted Educational Grant" made payable to Emory University. The terms, conditions and purposes of such grants must be documented by a signed Letter of Agreement between the manufacturer and the School.
