Jeffrey Pearl, PGY4, Receives Prestigious Award at ACS

PGY4 Emory Urology resident Jeffrey Pearl, MD, received an Excellence in Research Award at the 2016 American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress in Washington, DC, October 16-20. The ACS Scientific Forum Committee presents the awards to the top 1% of abstracts submitted to the congress by residents, fellows, and scientific investigators in training.
Dr. Pearl's abstract, "Patient Frailty and Discharge Disposition following Radical Cystectomy," described an examination of a nationwide database that found that frail patients undergoing radical cystectomy for bladder cancer were at a higher than twofold risk of being discharged to a nursing home after surgery.
Emory Urology surgeon-scientists Viraj Master, MD, PhD, and Kennth Ogan, MD, were senior authors on the project. Additional contributors were Emory Urology members Dattatraya Patil, MBBS, MPH, Christopher Filson, MD, MS, Mehrdad Alemozaffar, MD, and Emory Surgery vascular surgeon Shipra Arya, MD.
Dr. Pearl was also a finalist in the top poster category of the 9th Annual Emory Healthcare Quality Conference held on June 6th. Of the 130 posters presented from six contributing hospitals, only 29 were picked as finalists. "Tele-Urology Versus Face-to-Face Clinics: A Survey of Patient Preference" described the improved care provided at the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center by implementing a telephone-based clinic to evaluate patients with hematuria.
