Emory Urology made its presence felt at the 81st Annual Meeting of the Southeastern Section of the American Urological Association (SESAUA), held in Austin, TX, on March 23-26, 2017. Emory medical students, residents, research staff, and faculty made a total of 10 podium presentations and 14 poster presentations. Additionally, several faculty members were involved in panel discussions and moderated sessions.
Chris Filson, MD, Assistant Professor, was a panelist discussing difficult cancer cases, andJohn Pattaras, MD, Associate Professor, was a panelist considering international volunteerism in urology.Muta Issa, MD, Professor, moderated a panel discussion on innovations in surgical management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), andViraj Master, MD, Professor, was a moderator for a kidney and miscellaneous podium session.Martin Sanda, MD, Professor and Chair of Emory Urology, moderated a panel discussion on early stage prostate cancer.
Adam Lorentz, MD, PGY-4 resident, was the 2017 winner of the Montague Boyd Essay Contest for his presentation "Liquid Biopsy for Renal Cell Carcinoma," marking the second year in a row in which an Emory trainee has won this prestigious honor. The Montague Boyd Prize is the SESAUA's most distinguished award, and is named for Montague Boyd, MD, of Atlanta, GA, who founded the SESAUA and served as its first president in 1933 and 1934. The prize was established in 1967, and is given to a resident, fellow, or urologist less than ten years in practice for outstanding research that impacts urologic patient care.
Over the past four decades, the SESAUA has grown from 47 to 2,000 members, and currently represents the largest section of the AUA.
