Akanksha Mehta: SWIU Appointment and New Academic Role
February 2016
Shortly after attending the 5th Annual Clinical Mentoring Conference of the Society of Women in Urology (SWIU) in Fort Lauderdale as an invited speaker,Akanksha Mehta, MD, was appointed to the SWIU's Board of Directors, effective May 8, 2016. SWIU has more than 650 members, including over 250 board-certified female urologists, as well as female urology residents, fellows, and post-residency, pre-board-certified women. SWIU also has female members who are non-urology MDs and PhDs.
Dr. Mehta presented a lecture on the evaluation and treatment of male infertility at the conference, and was also a panelist for "Controversies in Testosterone Replacement and Current Practices" and an instructor for the hands-on workshop "Treatment of Peyronie's Disease, Testosterone Replacement, IPP, Proficiency Testing with Video Semen Analysis Stations."
On her home turf, Dr. Mehta has assumed directorship of undergraduate medical education for the Emory Department of Urology. In this capacity, she was among the School of Medicine's faculty core representatives during the March 6-9, 2016, site visit by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Ongoing accreditation from the LCME, the national accrediting body for educational programs leading to the MD degree in the United States and Canada, is essential to medical schools.
"I'm very excited about newly implemented changes in the School of Medicine curriculum that will allow M3 students to rotate through urology as a surgical subspecialty elective during their general surgery clerkship," she says. "This will allow interested students to be exposed to clinical and academic urology much earlier in their training, and will provide better opportunities for students to pursue M4 electives and discovery experiences in the field."
