Our advanced practice provider post-graduate fellowship in urology provides certified nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) training in the diagnosis and treatment of urological conditions. Our educational environment includes a well-established academic university, a national cancer institute, and associated hospitals, and focuses on intellectual stimulation, surgical skills, and evidence-based medicine.
Training objectives include exposure to patients in outpatient, inpatient, and surgical settings; experience with perioperative care; and enabling residents to gain the confidence and ability necessary to practice in a urology setting of their choice.
Overview
Advanced practice provider fellows rotate through outpatient clinics, outpatient surgery and procedures, and operating room and inpatient services. Rotation sites are currently Emory University Hospital, The Emory Clinic, and Winship Cancer Institute, and include both clinical and didactic components. The Emory University School of Medicine is also affiliated with multiple area hospitals, including Grady Memorial Hospital (with a Level 1 trauma center), Emory University Hospital Midtown, Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital, and the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
This 12-month, full-time program leads to a fellowship certificate upon successful completion. Two fellows are selected each year, with one starting in the spring and the other in the fall. Fellows receive a competitive stipend with 26 days of personal time for vacation, holidays, and sick leave. Benefits include professional liability insurance, life insurance, lab coats, and parking. Additional benefit options offered include medical and dental insurance, a prescription medication plan, supplemental life insurance, personal accidental insurance, short term and long term disability, a retirement program, and flexible spending accounts for health and child care expenses. Housing will be the responsibility of the fellow, and must be in close proximity to the Emory campus and hospital due to at-home-call.
Curriculum
The didactic and clinical curriculum is based on adult urology, though there is limited exposure to pediatric urology in the didactic component. Clinical duties include history and physical examinations, writing patient orders and progress notes, hospital rounds and consultations, call, ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies, assisting in the operating room, and performing procedures. Teams of experienced urology faculty and specialty providers provide supervision.
Didactic components include assigned reading, guest lectures, attending rounds, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality conference, tumor board, didactic conference, journal club, and attending annual conferences by Emory Urology, Georgia Urological Association, and Atlanta Urological Society.
Areas of study include, but are not limited to: andrology, urolithiasis, shockwave lithotripsy, cystoscopy, ureteroscopy, transrectal ultrasound, prostate biopsy, penile dopplers, infertility, erectile dysfunction, female urology, laparoscopic/robotic surgery, cystoscopy, urologic oncology, trauma, incontinence, and urodynamics. There will be exposure to other fields that collaborate with Emory Urology, including radiation oncology, medical oncology, interventional radiology, and wound and ostomy care. There may be opportunities to individualize the curriculum to a particular area of interest.
Eligibility Criteria

Graduate of an accredited APP program with a minimum GPA of 3.0

Eligible to sit for or have passed PANCE by time of acceptance to the program

Bachelors degree, though a masters degree is preferred
