Director of Research Operations
Michael Gilkey serves as a technical resource and advisor on research and regulatory issues with Emory and the VA, creates submissions and maintains compliance with Institutional Review Board (IRB) regulations, submits technology transfer paperwork, submits data use agreements, acquires images and clinical data and maintains project databases for the various research projects within the VA Hub for Computer Vision and Machine Learning in Precision Oncology (CoMPL), and organizes and supports the research team’s grant application efforts and post-award management of research milestones. He is also a member of the VA Actively Managed Programs committee and Lung Precision Oncology Program (LPOP) Radiology and LCS Scientific Radiomics/AI workgroups.
Mr. Gilkey is also an independent consultant, part-time faculty instructor in the Department of Biology at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), and has held leadership positions from director to CEO. He has been responsible for commercial and economic development for the SHARE Inc., Trailhead Biosystems Inc. and the National Center for Regenerative Medicine, with the end result of identifying new strategic partners, creating joint projects, starting sponsored research agreements and building closer relationships with corporate partners. He has been responsible for the development and execution of organizational strategy, planning and completion of both external and internal marketing efforts, commercializing member technology through institutional technology transfer offices, and providing administrative and operational support for its members. He has coordinated various oversight committees and interacted with partner institutions to create multi-institutional grants and training programs, aid clinical research endeavors, and interface with government relations groups to positively influence new policy. Mr. Gilkey also provided business planning and strategy, proforma creation, raising financial capital, grant writing, intern utilization, marketing strategy, and creative design for start-up companies including 8th Day Brewing, Abintra Technologies, Antria, Aurea Medical, BioInVision, Cleveland Cord Blood Center, CLeveland Understands Biotech (CLUB), Garrett’s Mill Brewery, Gilkey Biotechnology Consulting, GTCbio, Invenio Therapeutics, Pathfinder Biotech, Red5 Pharmaceuticals, SHARE, Stryker Law, and The Jolly Scholar Brewery.
Mr. Gilkey earned both an MS degree in biomedical engineering and an MBA with a concentration in entrepreneurship and marketing. He also holds a BS degree in biological engineering from Louisiana State University.
