About the Emory Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship Program
The Division of Musculoskeletal Imaging offers a one-year fellowship in diagnostic and procedural orthopedic imaging. The program emphasizes clinical service, resident teaching, and scholarly activity. The Division of Musculoskeletal Imaging and its faculty members provide orthopedic imaging interpretation and consultation for the Atlanta Falcons, the Atlanta Hawks, the Atlanta Braves, the Atlanta Dream, Georgia Tech and Emory University collegiate athletes, and for high school and recreational athletes around the metro Atlanta region.
The division additionally provides diagnostic and procedural ultrasound services for the departments of Rheumatology and Orthopaedics, and its Division of Sports Medicine, and the Peripheral Nerve Clinic. We also have a growing MR neurography service.
The program strives to prepare individuals for an academic or subspecialized private practice career. There is a potential opportunity for dedicated research time and observation/correlation of cases in the orthopedic surgery operating room.

Diagnostic and Procedural Caseload
The fellowship features training in radiography, CT, MR, and ultrasound imaging interpretation of bone, joint, soft tissue, and spine pathology. At the Emory Orthopaedic and Spine Center and Emory Sports Medicine Center/Atlanta Hawks Nest at Executive Park, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Emory University Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital, and Grady Hospital, a significant number of image-guided procedures are performed including image-guided joint injections; peripheral nerve blocks; joint aspirations; and biopsies of bone, soft tissue masses, and the spine. Image guidance is performed using CT, ultrasound, and fluoroscopy. At Grady Hospital, a Level I trauma center, there is a significant emphasis on musculoskeletal-related trauma care.
Multidisciplinary Activity
Our department works closely with the robust orthopedic oncology practice at Emory and participates in the weekly multidisciplinary sarcoma conference. There are periodic multidisciplinary conferences related to sports medicine, peripheral neuropathy, and foot and ankle injuries.
Locations
This fellowship will give you the opportunity to interact with established specialists of the Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Center, the Emory Sports Medicine/Atlanta Hawks Nest complex at Executive Park, Emory University Hospital Midtown, and the Emory University Orthopaedics and Spine Hospital at Northlake. We also serve the musculoskeletal imaging needs at Grady Memorial Hospital and work with the hospital's specialists in orthopedics and trauma. The diversity of settings translates into
Equipment
Fellows will interpret images acquired on various state-of-the-art CT units, including the new, low-dose Carestream Cone Beam CT, which allows for 3D imaging and weight-bearing studies with walk-in entry, and 1.5T and 3T MRI units, including the Siemens Magnetom Skyra 3T MR imager for 3D imaging of joints and the spine. Fellows will also make use of ultrasound and fluoroscopy units for diagnostic and procedural cases.
Research and Education
The fellowship program emphasizes continuing education and strongly encourages participation in scholarly endeavors. Protected research time is available for fellows with approved scholarly projects. All fellows will participate in weekly case conferences and recurring multidisciplinary conferences (sarcoma, peripheral nerve, sports arthroscopy/MR correlation, and foot and ankle), in addition to spending time teaching residents.
