Abdominal Imaging

The Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences offers a one-year non-accredited fellowship position in abdominal imaging. The fellowship includes comprehensive training and experience in all aspects of abdominal radiology including CT, abdominal and pelvic MRI, PET/MRI, ultrasound, radiography, and fluoroscopy. Six weeks of elective time is available to rotate through other divisions. Fellows participate in dedicated didactics, interesting case conference, and tumor boards. Involvement in ongoing research is encouraged and supported. The Division of Abdominal Imaging has close working relationships with specialists throughout metro Atlanta, allowing for a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. The program strives to prepare individuals for an academic or specialized private practice career.

The patient population served by the Emory Healthcare system is large and diverse. The fellowship provides training related to a well-established transplantation service (liver, kidney, pancreas, and bone marrow), two dedicated cancer centers, and three different emergency rooms. Extensive experience with medical and surgical oncology includes hepatobiliary, pancreatic, gynecological, hematological, dermatological, and urological pathology. The emergency departments located at Grady Memorial Hospital, Emory University Hospital, and Emory University Hospital Midtown provide vast exposure to common and uncommon illnesses and conditions. As the region's premier level-1 trauma center, Grady additionally offers exposure to abdominal/pelvic trauma cases.

State-of-the-art multi-detector CT is performed at all facilities with dual-energy at some locations. Fellows receive training in CT and CT angiography as well as 2D and 3D reconstructions on a variety of workstations. Dedicated CT colonography training is provided and an elective in CT coronary angiography is available.

Fellows receive extensive training in MR imaging of the liver, kidneys, adrenals, pancreas, and of the male and female pelvis. Fellows have the opportunity to collaborate with the Division of Nuclear Medicine on PET/MRI exams. An elective in cardiac imaging is available.

Fellows receive training in routine barium studies as well as fistulograms and defecography.

Extensive experience is provided in abdominal and pelvic sonography. Gynecological ultrasound comprises the vast majority of pelvic sonography and includes training in hysterosonography. Training in obstetric ultrasound (OB/US) is available if requested. Experience with all aspects of vascular ultrasound is provided including training in color Doppler sonography of the carotid arteries, transplant sonography, abdominal Doppler, and peripheral vascular sonography. An additional focus is thyroid and postoperative neck ultrasound. There has been increasing use of intra-operative sonography, mostly for hepatic resection. The Division of Abdominal Imaging collaborates with hepatic surgeons in cases of hepatic resection, radiofrequency ablation, and cryosurgery. Fellows also gain experience in saline-infused sonohysterogram.
