Dr. Robert G. Sybers joined the Emory faculty and the radiology staff at Grady in 1964. Over his 36-year career with Emory and Grady, Dr. Sybers helped advance both the science and practice of cardiothoracic imaging.
With a PhD in physiology-cardiology, he added a new dimension to Emory Radiology’s research, especially in collaboration with departmental colleagues and several of Emory’s thoracic and vascular surgeons. He co-authored three textbooks, including The Aortic Arch and Its Malformations with Emphasis on the Angiographic Features, written with Emory Radiology colleague Dr. Wade Shuford and published in 1974. He also authored dozens of journal articles.
Beloved by radiology residents and medical students, Dr. Sybers was named Teacher of the Year several times. Upon his death in 2001, the Department of Radiology established the Robert G. Sybers Education Fund to enhance the residency program at Grady.
Prior to joining the Emory team, Dr. Sybers was a senior assistant surgeon for the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, for three years. He earned two BS degrees as well as his medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin. He also completed his medical internship and radiology residency there.
