Dr. Murray Baron joined the faculty of the Emory School of Medicine in 1982 and was a professor of radiology for 26 years. Dr. Baron was a widely recognized pioneer in the field of cardiac radiology, and he devoted his interests to plain-film diagnosis, angiography, and cross-sectional imaging of congenital heart disease. His other clinical and academic appointments included Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York, NY, where he was associate professor of radiology; professor of radiology at State University of New York at Stony Brook; and radiologist-in-chief at the Long Island Jewish Hillside Medical Center in New York.
A natural leader, Dr. Baron was president of the North American Society for Cardiovascular Imaging (NASCI) from 1980 to 1981, and he received the NASCI Gold Medal in 2008 for his contributions to the society and to the field of cardiovascular radiology. He also held many leadership positions for the American Heart Association, the American College of Radiology, the Society of Cardiac and Interventional Radiology, and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). Dr. Baron was a member of the RSNA Learning Center Committee from 1994 to 2000 and the RSNA representative to the Intersociety Commission for Heart Disease Resources from 1983 to 1990.
He was a reviewer for a number of leading journals in both radiology and cardiology, including Radiology from 1986 until he retired. He was the author or coauthor of 148 papers, book chapters, and reviews, including multiple editions of Cecil Textbook of Medicine.
Dr. Baron earned his MD at the University of Michigan in 1952. He went on to complete a rotating internship at Philadelphia General Hospital in 1953; a fellowship in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN in 1956; a fellowship at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City in 1957; and then completed a residency in radiology at the University of Michigan in 1960.
