The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) named Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University radiation oncologist Sagar Patel, MD, a recipient of the Class of 2022 Young Investigator Awards. Patel, who is also an assistant professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Emory University School of Medicine and a member of Winship's Cancer Prevention and Control research program, received the 2022 Joel Holsinger-PCF Young Investigator Award for his project, "Biomarker-Based Approaches to Understand and Predict Cardiovascular Toxicity from Androgen Deprivation Therapy in Patients with Prostate Cancer."
The award provides support for Patel to conduct a randomized clinical trial of prostate cancer patients receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), the primary therapy for advanced and aggressive prostate cancer, to investigate how different forms of androgen-targeting therapies impact inflammation and cardiovascular biology. Cardiac imaging and genomic/immune-based biomarkers associated with cardiovascular risk will be evaluated to identify those that can predict which patients are at risk for cardiovascular toxicity from ADT. If successful, this project will identify mechanisms underlying cardiovascular toxicity from ADT and discover predictive biomarkers that can identify patients at highest risk for cardiovascular disease, which can be used to guide treatment and risk-reduction strategies.
PCF Young Investigator Awards are intended to identify a cohort of future research leaders who will keep the field of prostate cancer research vibrant with new ideas and offer career and project support for early career physicians and scientists who are committed to advancing the prostate cancer field. Thirty-four PCF Young Investigator Awards totaling $7.2 million were granted in 2022 to the promising next generation of cancer researchers.
Founded in 1993, PCF has been responsible for raising close to $1 billion in support of prostate cancer research by more than 2,200 research projects at 245 cancer centers in 28 countries around the world.
