Winship Cancer Institute and its Department of Radiation Oncology is upgrading the technology for its large stereotactic radiosurgery program by installing a new Edge® radiosurgery system at the Clifton campus. The Edge, created by Varian Medical Systems, will be used by Winship radiation oncologists to deliver stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) treatments to patients with a variety of medical diagnoses with a high degree of precision and accuracy.
"The Edge allows our team to deploy state-of-the-art radiation therapy," says Sean Dresser, MS, DABMP, physics operations manager and lead medical physicist in the department. "It allows our physicians to deliver stereotactic radiation therapy treatments utilizing the efficiency and safety of HyperArc, an end-to-end class solution for cranial treatment."
The Edge will be the primary unit at Emory University Hospital for patients with lung, central nervous system, pancreatic, liver, and spinal tumors who require stereotactic radiation treatment. The machine will be ready for patient use in mid-June.
