Innovate. Collaborate. Transform is the theme for the 61st annual American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) annual meeting held in Chicago from September 15-18. Over two dozen radiation oncologists and other investigators from Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University will present research that embodies these tenets.
Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD, FACR, FASCO, Winship executive director and chair of the Emory Department of Radiation Oncology is a 2019 ASTRO Gold Medal recipient. Curran will be honored for his contributions to the field of radiation oncology at a ceremony on Tuesday, September 17. The Gold Medal Award is ASTRO's highest honor for those who have excelled in research, clinical care, teaching, and service.
Winship faculty Mylin Torres, MD, Kristin Higgins, MD, and Aparna Kesarwala, MD, PhD will participate in the prestigious Presidential Symposium on September 15. Torres will moderate a discussion on how "Radiotherapy is Redefining the Cure of Metastatic Breast Cancer” and later lead a plenary session discussion on "Cosmetic Outcomes from Post Lumpectomy Whole Breast Irradiation (WBI) Versus Partial Breast Irradiation (PBI) on the NRG Oncology/NSABP B39-RTOG 0413 Phase III Clinical Trial." Higgins will present "Radiotherapy is Becoming the Standard for Curing Oligometastatic Lung Cancer" and later speak at an education session on the “Practical Aspects of Reirradiation."
Kesarwala will moderate a discussion at the Presidential Symposium on "Imaging at the Micrometer Scale is Possible and Required for RT to Cure Metastatic Disease." She also will moderate a mini-oral session on September 16 on "Innovative Approaches to Improve Therapeutic Response" and present at the "Association of Residents in Radiation Oncology Poster Viewing with a Professor."
Emory Proton Therapy Center Medical Director Mark McDonald, MD will present a poster on "Overall Survival Following Treatment of Localized Prostate Cancer with Proton Therapy, External Beam Photon Therapy, or Brachytherapy: A National Cancer Data Base Analysis."
Pretesh Patel, MD, Winship radiation oncology residency director will present a poster on "The Effect of Neoadjuvant Radiotherapy on Tumor Regression Grade in Resected Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma."
