Congratulations Kristin Higgins, MD, and Eduard Schreibmann, PhD on their recent faculty promotions! With a collective 20 years of professorship dedicated to the Winship Cancer Institute's department of radiation oncology, including many hours committed to research and patient care, Drs. Higgins and Schreibmann make it a priority to train and mentor the next generation of physicians, researchers, and faculty.
Dr. Higgins, medical director of the Clifton Road radiation oncology facility, is uniquely positioned to provide Winship residents with advanced clinical training, career development opportunities, and mentorship. Resident Chase Escott, MD, one of Dr. Higgins mentees, was recently awarded the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Resident Poster Viewing Recognition Award and will be honored at a ceremony later this year.
"The greatest thing about teaching at an academic hospital, is that you are really able to impress upon students the importance of the research and clinical training that they receive," Dr. Higgins states, "Winship faculty work on a multitude of innovative and collaborative projects that touch the lab, clinic, academic departments, and the patient."
According to Dr. Schreibmann, a medical physicist in the Department of Radiation Oncology, his new role as an associate professor is all about exploring collaborations and connecting with students. "Every professor has their own style: meeting regularly with mentees to develop a supportive environment for research, instilling leadership skills in mentees empowering them to navigate their own opportunities, or showing personal concern for mentees professional development. If you are actively engaging with your students, then you are doing your job."
Medical education is a large part of Winship's core mission, creating the landscape for Winship to provide cancer patients with the most advanced treatments and best care. Winship Executive Director and Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology, Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD says, "I am excited to promote the achievement of two of our most dedicated faculty. Drs. Higgins and Schreibmann are outstanding educators, and our radiation oncology residents are very fortunate to have them as mentors."
