Overview
The Emory Department of Radiation Oncology collaborates with Southern Illinois University Carbondale Masters of Medical Dosimetry program to offer a diverse experience in both didactic and clinical aspects of radiation oncology.
Our access to advanced technology provides students the opportunity to learn different techniques, treatment planning systems, and modalities including intensity-modulated radiation therapy, volumetric modulated arc therapy, intensity modulated proton therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, stereotactic body radiation therapy, and brachytherapy.
The program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology, and meets the formal education eligibility criteria for the national certification exam following graduation as required by the Medical Dosimetry Certification Board. Students must complete 1,684 hours to graduate and meet the eligibility for the board examination.
The one-year program takes place from August to August with the didactic portion provided by Southern Illinois University and the clinical training provided at Emory. Students rotate through the following locations:
- Winship Cancer Institute (Clifton campus)
- Emory University Hospital Midtown
- Emory Proton Therapy Center
- Emory Decatur Hospital
- Emory Hillandale Hospital
- Grady Memorial Hospital
The program serves as an ideal recruitment tool for the Emory Department of Radiation Oncology. Ten of the current medical dosimetrists on staff graduated from the program.
