Training Settings

Based within the Emory University School of Medicine Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Rehabilitation Medicine, the psychology internship program provides opportunities for clinical training rotations set within multiple Emory-based and affiliate clinics and hospital systems. The Emory-based internship training sites include the Emory Brain Health Center and the Emory Rehabilitation Hospital, both of which are components of Emory Healthcare. Emory affiliate health system internship training sites include Grady Health System and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Collectively, these internship settings provide a dynamic training environment rich in learning opportunities for interns. 

The Emory Brain Health Center (EBHC) is a component of the Emory academic health center network situated in a growing Emory University medical specialty campus approximately 2 miles from the main campus.  Housed in a freestanding 5-story outpatient facility, the EBHC combines the expertise and resources of the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Neurology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Neurosurgery, and Sleep Medicine to facilitate prediction, prevention, treatment, and cure of brain disorders through interdisciplinary collaboration among Emory clinicians, teachers, and researchers. This collaborative health specialty community seeks to advance research, education, and care in a science-driven, patient- and family-centered environment. The EBHC neuropsychology program, a unit of the Department of Neurology, is staffed by neuropsychologists who provide diagnostic services for outpatients with dementia, mild cognitive impairment, epilepsy, and movement disorders.  It is a primary training site for interns on the adult/geriatric concentration of the neuropsychology track. Interns from all tracks also attend their weekly psychology intern core seminar at the EBHC.

Located along the health sciences corridor on the Atlanta campus of Emory University, the Emory Rehabilitation Hospital (ERH) is part of Emory’s teaching hospital and health care network.  Housed in a 5-story, 56-bed rehabilitation facility that includes a 28-bed inpatient neurorehabilitation service, the ERH provides inpatient, day program, and outpatient rehabilitation services to address the medical, physical, cognitive, psychological, vocational, and community reintegration needs of persons with disability.  These services are offered by a team of physicians, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, physical therapists, recreation therapists, and neuropsychologists.  The ERH is also home to the Emory University School of Medicine Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, which ranks among the top departments nationally for research in physical medicine and rehabilitation.  The department is committed to brain injury and stroke research and has been the site of a federally funded Traumatic Brain Injury and Stroke Research and Training Center as well as a federally funded Model Traumatic Brain Injury System of Care. The rehabilitation neuropsychology program at ERH serves all clinical departments across the campus-based facilities of the Emory Healthcare system. It is a primary training site for interns on the neuropsychology track. 

An affiliate of the Emory University School of Medicine and staffed by faculty from both the Emory and Morehouse medical schools, Grady Health System (GHS) is the primary provider of public safety-net health services in metropolitan Atlanta. Among the largest community health systems in the country, GHS has as part of its mission a commitment to providing high quality care for medically under-served communities.  GHS is anchored by Grady Memorial Hospital, an internationally recognized teaching facility with 961 beds located in downtown Atlanta. GHS also operates multiple community-based outpatient primary care and specialty clinics located throughout the metropolitan Atlanta area.  Among its best-known medical programs are the Level 1 Marcus Trauma Center, Burn Center, the Marcus Stroke and Neuroscience Center, the Georgia Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, the Georgia Cancer Center for Excellence, and the Avon Foundation Breast Health Center.  A large behavioral health program at GHS offers a continuum of adult services, including emergency, crisis intervention, acute psychiatry inpatient, medical-psychiatry inpatient, consultation-liaison, general outpatient community behavioral health, psychosocial rehabilitation, assertive community treatment, and mental health case management services. Primary care services are offered within the outpatient community behavioral health program, and behavioral health specialists are integrated within GHS general primary care clinics. Specialty behavioral health services also are integrated into the adult and pediatric HIV primary care programs at the Ponce de Leon Center, which is among the top academically affiliated outpatient HIV specialty care programs in the country. GHS is the primary training site for psychology interns on the general and trauma tracks of the general internship experience.  Neuropsychology track interns also participate in minor clinical rotations at GHS.

Ranked nationally in multiple pediatric specialties, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) is one of the largest pediatric health care systems in the country.  It is comprised of three hospitals and over 25 neighborhood locations throughout the metropolitan Atlanta area, including the Marcus Autism Center.  The CHOA hospitals include the Arthur M. Blank Hospital located on the North Druid Hills campus, Children’s at Hughes Spalding located on the Grady Memorial Hospital campus, and Children’s at Scottish Rite in the north Atlanta area. The Center for Advanced Pediatrics is a state-of-the-art outpatient medical office building housing multiple pediatric specialty programs under one roof.  The CHOA Department of Neuropsychology is a primary training site for interns on the adult/pediatric concentration of the neuropsychology track. Additionally, interns on the general track complete portions of their training at the Arthur M. Blank Hospital.
