Sylvia is a first generation immigrant from China and moved to Birmingham, Alabama at the age of 10. She remains fluent in Chinese and has served as a translator for a Chinese Theater. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in Health and Societies, she attended medical school at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Sylvia spent a year doing research on polycystic kidney disease at UAB and spent a summer doing acute kidney injury research at Vanderbilt. Her most recent scholarly project has been an investigation of the impact of adverse childhood experiences on sleep in adulthood. She has been active in the community and volunteers with the student-run clinics. Outside of school, Sylvia practices the art of Shotokan karate and has earned a brown belt. She is also an avid podcast listener and enjoys Disney movies.
