William Powers attended the University of Georgia for undergraduate, where he double majored in Psychology and Philosophy and graduated magna cum laude. In between college and medical school, he volunteered in the emergency department at Grady Memorial Hospital and eventually transitioned to working as Patient Advocate in the department. He then matriculated to Mercer University School of Medicine, where he served as a member of the of the subcommittee for Continuous Quality Improvement and Assessment as part of Mercer’s Curriculum & Instruction Committee, ultimately representing all students on their clinical rotations. During his own clinical years in Columbus, Georgia, he worked with the National Alliance on Mental Illness to reinvigorate a program for providing mental health education in a small-group setting for inmates at the Muscogee County Jail. His non-medical interests include cooking, reading, tabletop and board gaming, and video gaming.
