Amena is a New York native, born and raised in Brooklyn. She attended Macaulay Honors College at CUNY Brooklyn College where she studied biology. Amena is committed to underserved communities and previously worked as a health education intern at an adolescent health clinic and volunteered as a literacy coach for elementary school students. She also has many years of experience in journalism, serving as the Editor for her undergraduate newsletter, the Macaulay Messenger. Upon matriculation to medical school at New York University Long Island School of Medicine, she started the first student-run newsletter for the school, LISOM Minds. Amena has been involved in several research projects, studying the relationship between movement disorders and the long-term use of Bupropion and the association between tobacco exposure and hyponatremia. Amena is passionate about women’s mental health and started a quality improvement project aimed at increasing the frequency of depression screening for postpartum mothers. Outside of work, she enjoys travel, learning languages, cooking and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
