Application
Residents applying to the Global and Population Health Track (GPHT) must be in good standing within the residency. Preference will be given to residents that are able to participate in the entire curriculum for two consecutive years.
Application to the Global and Population Health Track includes:
- A brief personal statement (no more than 500 words)
- A letter of recommendation from an Emory faculty member
Goal
To educate psychiatrists in the principles of population and global mental health so that they may deliver culturally-informed care to a diverse set of patients in the US and around the world.
Topics Covered
- Common global mental health issues
- Common frameworks, opportunities for traveling to low- and middle-income countries (e.g. disaster relief, ongoing collaborations with continual presence; ongoing collaborations with episodic presence, etc.)
- Cultural aspects of mental health and illness
- Global mental health priorities
- Human rights issues (e.g. detention, interrogation, torture, etc.)
- Immigration-related issues (e.g., working with refugee populations, detainees, survivors of torture, etc.)
- International sources of data (e.g., WHO, UN, UNICEF, WPA, etc.)
- Population health
- Working with traditional healers, faith healers, and indigenous leaders
- Working in low-resource settings (challenges and benefits)
- Mental Health Advocacy and Activism
Didactic Curriculum
- Health Equity, Advocacy, and Policy Track (application due March 15 of PGY-2 year)
- Quarterly small group sessions, PGY-3 and PGY-4 years
- Social Medicine Elective Month (February or March of PGY-2 or PGY-3 year)
- Monthly meeting (8am Wed, noon Wed, or evening), PGY-3 and PGY-4 years
- Presentations/discussions of various topics/journal club
- Led by GPHT faculty

- Introduction to Global Mental Health (Fall course, Wed 4-6pm, PGY-3 or PGY-4 year)
- Health in Emergencies Course (5-day course, January)
- Mental Health in Populations Course (2-day course, early March)

- Online quarterly meeting with partners from other US institutions
- Emory Global Health Residency Scholars Program (GHRSP)
- Monthly didactic series (Wednesdays 6:30-8:30pm) in PGY-4 year

Clinical Curriculum
PGY-3:
- Half day per week (resident will be required to use elective time or defer child clinic)
- 2 afternoons per month: Clarkston Community Health Center Mental Health Clinic (supervision by Martha Ward, MD)
- 2 half days per month: Asylum Psychological Assessment with Atlanta Asylum Network (contact: Dabney Evans) or Georgia Asylum and Immigration Network (contact: Alpa Amin)
PGY-4:
- Emory Farmworker Project
- 5 days in June and 3 days in October
- International Rotation
- 1 month; with GHRSP in Addis or another location
Scholarly Activity
PGY-3:
Work with an identified faculty mentor to begin work on a scholarly project (e.g., population or global health-focused manuscript, presentation at a professional conference, quality improvement project related to population health) that will begin during 3rd year and will result in dissemination of the project during 4th year.
PGY-4:
Complete and submit a scholarly project (e.g., population or global health-focused manuscript, presentation at a professional conference, quality improvement project related to population health).
