Our Story
Early Emory was established in 1985 as the Walden Early Childhood Center at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The founding director, Dr. Gail McGee, brought the school to Emory in July 1992 as a lab-based program for the development and research of inclusive educational practices for children diagnosed with autism and children with typical development. At that time, few opportunities existed for children with and without developmental disabilities to interact and learn in an environment that would benefit both. Dr. McGee pioneered a method known as incidental teaching, using children’s natural curiosity and interests to teach new knowledge and skills through play and a structured environment so fun and learning go hand-in-hand.
Today, Early Emory remains committed to an inclusive, incidental, and enriched learning environment for children with autism and children with typical development working, playing, and growing together. Our program integrates evidence-based practice in child development, early autism intervention and relationship-based learning. Our focus is on what will best serve the needs of children and families with an eye on innovation and advocacy for quality learning for all children.
What Parents Say
We feel so fortunate that all three of our children have been able to learn, play, and grow at Early Emory. Their exposure to an inclusive environment from such early ages has been an important contributor to learning that not everyone experiences the world the same way that they do – not only that this is ok, but that it is also wonderful!" - LC & ML
“All three of our children went through the program at Early Emory! It was absolutely instrumental in helping them to become well-rounded, compassionate individuals! The school always felt like family. We love Early Emory and the education our children received. Thank you!” - TB & SB
"Having previously sent our child to a different school, we were blown away with her experience at Early Emory. The faculty and staff truly are second to none. Their passion for their students is remarkable, and their communication is nothing short of amazing. We could not be happier for the care our child receives." - AJ & MJ
"We tried regular preschool and an ABA center - neither were right for our son. As soon as we visited Early Emory, we knew it was the right place for him - he is thriving in the inclusive environment, with opportunities to learn from his neurotypical peers while also getting 1:1 time with a therapist in a naturalistic environment. He loves going to school and we love to see our happy boy hit new milestones." - BF & MM
