Concussion Program
The Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Concussion Program is led by Neurotrauma Medical Director, Andrew Reisner, MD, and Program Manager, Mahwish Javed, MS, MPH. This program brings together expertise from the disciplines of Emergency Medicine, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Neuropsychology, Physiatry and Sports Medicine. Our mission is to be the state-leader offering unique access to multidisciplinary specialist concussion care.
By partnering with schools, coaches, athletic trainers and pediatricians in the community, we work together to assess patients and develop comprehensive care plans tailored to each patients’ individual needs. Collectively, our ultimate goal is to return each concussion patient to their daily schedule and activities as quickly and safely as possible.
We collaborate with local and national researchers of all disciplines to advance the understanding, treatment and management of pediatric concussion. We work to improve the health and quality of life of children who have suffered a concussion or second-impact concussion (second impact syndrome (SIS)). A critical part of our research at Emory University’s Department of Pediatrics and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is locating a specific biomarker for pediatric traumatic brain injury.
