The curriculum is structured around a three-year fellowship program. One-third of this time is devoted to clinical training. Our commitment to “education-based”, rather than “service-based” fellowship structure is made possible by the in-corporation of 34 masters-trained neonatal nurse practitioners, 27 MD & 5 PhD Faculty Members. Our state-of-the-art clinical service provides on-site exposure to the use of high-frequency ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and inhaled nitric oxide. Cross training in other related clinical arenas is encouraged through electives in maternal-fetal medicine, cardiology, etc. A well-structured postdoctoral education program forms the backbone of our fellowship program providing a solid background in research methods and design, statistics, epidemiology, critical review of literature, and laboratory methods. An ongoing series of seminars in basic sciences/advances, journal clubs, and lectures by nationally-renowned visiting faculty keep trainees up to date with the latest scientific and clinical developments.
Research training is a major component of our fellowship program with nearly two-thirds of the fellowship time dedicated to research pursuits. A wide range of research opportunities are offered within the division and elsewhere throughout the Medical School. The recently established Emory and Children’s Pediatric Research Center provides unprecedented opportunities for the fellow in training. Home to 13 research centers of excellence and 10 core facilities, the Emory and Children’s Pediatric Research Center has collaborative cutting edge research initiatives by investigators from Emory Woodruff Health Sciences Center, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Morehouse School of Medicine. The Division of Neonatology has 5500 sq ft of bench research space with ongoing projects utilizing a variety of research methods. Faculty and fellows have access to the Emory and Children’s Pediatric Research Center as well as several other research institutions in Atlanta, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, American Kidney Foundation, Arthritis Foundation, and Emory National Primate Research Center. Emory is a member of the National Institutes of Health Neonatal Network, which is involved in a number of multi-center clinical trials.
