The Pediatric Urgent Care fellowship is a one-year fellowship that was developed in the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Emory University in 2016 to better prepare residency graduates and practicing pediatricians to work in the emerging field of urgent care medicine. This fellowship, one of the first of its kind, is designed for pediatricians interested in practicing in either an academic or community setting who desire additional clinical and procedural training in pediatric urgent care. Urgent care providers are expected to provide expert care, often in settings with limited resources. As such, the urgent care provider must be both confident in his or her ability to manage a broad scope of medical problems and acuity, as well as recognize the limitations of his or her training and practice site.
The mission of the fellowship in Pediatric Urgent Care is to close the medical training gaps between a pediatric resident and an urgent care provider by providing additional experience in clinical specialty areas pertinent to pediatric urgent care practice.
Provide the fellow with feedback and mentorship on patient care, resource utilization, throughput, and customer service in the emergency department and urgent care setting.
Support the fellow in administrative, teaching, research and quality improvement endeavors.
Our vision is to train urgent care physicians who provide high quality, compassionate patient care and who are prepared to become experts and leaders in the emerging field of pediatric urgent care medicine.
Our Clinical Setting:
Fellows will work alongside both Pediatric Urgent Care and Pediatric Emergency Medicine faculty in the Emergency Departments at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston and Hughes Spalding. Our large physician group is composed of over 50 physicians, approximately one-third of whom are urgent care physicians, as well as fellows in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Point of Care Ultrasound. The emergency departments at Egleston and Hughes Spalding see a combined volume of over 130,000 patients per year, providing exposure to a vast scope of clinical practice. Fellows will also have the opportunity to work in the community setting at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s freestanding urgent care facilities.
Fellows spend dedicated blocks of time learning from specialists in disciplines such as orthopedics and radiology and gaining experience in sedation, ultrasound, and procedural skills. Regularly occurring didactics and a course in quality improvement is provided through Emory University Graduate Medical Education, and fellows are encouraged to participate in departmental teaching activities, administrative committees, research, and quality improvement projects depending on interest.
