Division Research
Pediatric research in the Division of Critical Care Medicine benefits from the multi-institutional partnership amongst:
- Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta
- one of the largest pediatric healthcare providers in the United States
- Emory University School of Medicine
- a leading academic medical center
- Georgia Institute of Technology
- a leading engineering school and global leader in developing pediatric technologies
- Morehouse School of Medicine
- a private medical school focused on primary care and public policy originally part of Morehouse College
An overview of the combined research resources within Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Emory University School of Medicine, the Georgia Institute of Technology and Morehouse School of Medicine can be found here.
A unique benefit of training at our institution involves connection to The Emory Critical Care Center. The Emory Critical Care Center (ECCC) supports an NIH T32 training grant within the Department of Surgery in the Emory University School of Medicine that is led by ECCC Director Dr. Craig Coopersmith, MD. The ECCC encourages cross-campus research, education, and professional development between adult and pediatric critical care medicine colleagues. Pediatric critical care medicine fellows who are dedicated to developing critical care research expertise in preparation for academic leadership are encouraged to apply for this competitive training award.
The Emory Department of Pediatrics also supports The Atlanta Pediatric Scholars Program (K12HD072245) funded by The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. This K12 program is a mentored institutional career development program for senior fellows and junior faculty who have recently completed post-graduate training in pediatrics and are committed to starting an independent basic/translational science research career. Applicants interested in applying for the T32, an institutional (K12, KL2) or an independent K-award (K08, K23) have the opportunity to apply for a Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) through the Emory Laney Graduate School to achieve the goals of the mentored-training award career development plan.
Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University also exist within a larger consortium of research institutions as part of the Georgia Clinical & Translational Science Alliance (GA CTSA) which offer opportunities for collaboration across many disciplines.
Ongoing research in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine encompass four broad categories including:
- Basic and Translational Laboratory Investigation
- Data and Implementation Science
- Health Services, Epidemiology, and Population Health
- Medical Education, Simulation, and Human Factors Engineering Research
We have active collaborations with engineering labs at the Georgia Tech involving non-invasive cardiovascular sensing device testing and physiology-on-a-chip projects. We have also worked on the development of novel bedside cerebral oxygenation, perfusion, and metabolism devices using optical device technologies to monitor brain health after cardiac arrest and traumatic brain injury. We have partnered with data science groups within the Center for Data Science within the Emory School of Nursing and the Emory Department of Biomedical Informatics to apply machine learning models to detect clinical deterioration in the critical care setting.
Fellows are encouraged to attend at least one clinical and scientific meeting annually. These meetings include the: Society of Critical Care Medicine Congress (SCCM), American Thoracic Society Conference (ATS), Shock Society Annual Conference, World Federation of Pediatric Intensive & Critical Care Societies (WFPICCS), Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting (PAS), and the American Academy of Pediatrics Conference (AAP).
