Clinical Rotations
The three-year fellowship program is divided into clinical training and research time, with a total of about 20 months of clinical time and 16 months of research time over the three years. Clinical time is weighted slightly heavier during the first year of training to allow for more research time and flexibility during the second and third years. Research weeks are generally call-free, with responsibilities for backup/jeopardy call and/or weekend cross-coverage for less than one third of the total research time. Most nighttime clinical coverage is through a night float system, with one 24-hour call per daytime service week.
Clinical training occurs at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, a quaternary care, free-standing Children’s Hospital affiliated with the Emory University School of Medicine. The hospital is the only pediatric Level 1 trauma center in the state, has one of the largest pediatric cardiothoracic surgery and solid-organ transplant programs in the country, and serves as a leader in advanced technologies, including pediatric ECMO. Fellows rotate through a 36-bed medical-surgical PICU and a 32-bed cardiac ICU. Fellows spend 2-5 weeks on off-service clinical rotations each year, including anesthesia, sedation, transport medicine, and electives. We currently have a complement of 15 fellows.
